Long, long ago, in the green land by the Red River, the rice fields were very thirsty. The rain had not come for a long time. The canals were full of mud and weeds, and the farmers were so tired that they had stopped working together. Each family worked alone in its own corner, and the work was very, very slow.
In a big lake near the old town lived a Golden Turtle. She was as old as the hills, and her shell glowed like the morning sun. The Golden Turtle looked at the dry fields and thought, "These people need a little light and a little courage. Then they will help each other." So she asked the Dragon King of the waters to lend a magic sword.
One evening, a fisherman named Lê Thận cast his net into the river. Swish went the net, splash went the water. When he pulled it up, there was no fish inside. There was a long, shining blade. He put it back and cast again. Swish, splash... and there was the same blade. A third time, the very same blade! Lê Thận laughed softly. "Well, if you want to come home with me so much, you may."
Far away in the forest, a kind man named Lê Lợi was walking home. Through the leaves he saw something glowing at the top of a banyan tree. He climbed up carefully and found a sword handle decorated with sparkling jewels. When Lê Lợi and Lê Thận met and slid the blade into the handle, click! It fit perfectly. On the blade were two words: "Thuận Thiên", which means "follow the way of Heaven".
Lê Lợi held up the sword. It was not for fighting anyone. It simply shone, bright and warm like a lamp. Wherever its light fell, people looked up from their tired work and smiled. "Come," said Lê Lợi. "Let's clean the canals together. Let's carry water together." And everyone came: grandmas and grandpas, mothers and fathers, big sisters and little brothers carrying small baskets.
With the sword's light to guide them, they worked even after sunset. Lê Lợi used the sword to cut through the twisty, knotted vines blocking the streams, snip, snip, snip. The water began to flow again, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle, into the fields. Soon the rain came too, pitter-patter, pitter-patter. The rice grew tall and green, and then golden. At harvest time, the whole land sang.
One spring day, when the baskets were full of rice and everyone was happy, Lê Lợi went out on a little dragon boat on the lake. The water was calm and still, like a mirror. Suddenly, the Golden Turtle rose up beside the boat, her shell sparkling in the sunshine.
"Lê Lợi," she said kindly, "the Dragon King lent you this sword to help the land. Now the people know how to work together, and the land is peaceful. Please give the sword back."
Lê Lợi bowed his head. "Thank you, Golden Turtle. Thank you, Dragon King, for this precious gift." He held out the sword with both hands. The Golden Turtle took it gently in her mouth, swam one slow circle around the boat, and sank down, down, down into the green water. A little golden light glowed under the lake, then softly faded away.
From that day on, people called the lake Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, the Lake of the Returned Sword. It is still there today, right in the middle of Hà Nội, with a little tower standing in the water. And if you sit quietly by the lake and listen to the breeze, you might imagine the Golden Turtle resting at the bottom, happy that her gift came back with a big thank-you.
Parent tip: Invite your child to make the "swish, splash" net sounds with you, then ask how they would say thank you to the Golden Turtle.
Ask your child: After the story, you can ask: “Who was kind in this story, and what did they do?”
This is a gentle retelling with no battles or fighting; the sword only shines and helps people, and nothing in it is scary.
